Child rights action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Preventing Violent Extremism through Education

0 comments

This United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) video illustrates the importance of preventing violent extremism through education. It is based on excerpts from "My Former Life", produced by the Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Foundation for Peace, based on testimonies of people once engaged in promoting or perpetrating extreme violence. The video also draws attention to some of the drivers of violent extremism, to the role of education in preventing violent extremism, and to educational approaches recommended by UNESCO. For example, education can redress some of the inequalities that fuel violent extremism and can help learners make informed decisions and engage responsibly. This relies on:

  • inclusion for students to develop a sense of belonging and respect for diversity;
  • resilience to build students' capacities to overcome hardships and challenges;
  • safety and well-being in schools;
  • procedures to appropriately respond to the needs of persons at risk; and
  • partnerships between educational institutions and the community at large.
