Child rights action with informed and engaged societies

After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter.

Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

On the transfer, co-founder Victoria Martin expressed her pleasure to see this work continue under Wits' leadership, knowing that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

As Wits, we honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades and look forward building from that strong base. This includes co-founders Warren Feek (1953-2024) and Victoria Martin as well as La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA), which continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com with links to The CI Global site. We are also eager to forge new partnerships and entertain new ideas as we consider how best to contribute to social and behaviour change in our rapidly evolving environment.

If you are joining the International Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) Summit in Panama, please join Wits and CILA on Monday, 22 June, to share your thoughts and suggestion for the relaunch of the Communication Initiative. We will be in Pacifica 5 from 12-1:25 for the Refuel, Reflect, and Renew Lunch Series: The Communication Initiative: celebrating a driving force for Communication for Social Change and the way forward. We will reflect on the legacy of Warren Feek and family in creating the Communication Initiative, consider the contributions of CI over the years and then turn our attention towards the future in this dynamic session.

If you are unable to join us in Panama, we still want to hear from you. Please contribute your thoughts by following this link: https://redcap.link/CommunicationInitiative2026 or reaching out to ci_surveys@commint.com

To: Global Alliance Review and Interim Working Group.

Hi folks – we just wanted to outline the process for the next few weeks. There are a number of things it would be good to accelerate. Can we suggest the following (please note that given various daylight time practices and changes across the globe soon we use GMT below as it is the one constant!). Call in numbers will follow soon for the sub-groups and we are asking who would like to host the in-person planning meeting.

1. The “Name” sub-group – Sue, James, Hope, Patrick, Rafael/Warren

Conference call on Tuesday October 24th at 4pm GMT.

The names suggested to date are in this thread with some comments. Can we please encourage you to submit your thoughts in this thread. Anyone not in this group should also feel free to submit ideas and considerations through this thread for their consideration.

2. The Criteria sub-group – Lisa, Patrick, Rhadika, Susan, Rafael/Warren

Conference call on Wednesday October 25th at 4pm GMT.

As requested we have outlined here the criteria used for the present list of organisations at the Alliance table. Cam we please encourage you to review these and either seek clarification and/or propose criteria. Anyone not in this group should also feel free to submit ideas and considerations through this thread for their consideration.

3. The Reasonable priorities sub-group – Antje, James, Susan, Sue, Kama, Rafael/Warren

Conference call on Thursday October 26th at 4pm GMT.

The thread for comments is here along with the draft plan as an attachment. Can we please suggest that you review the plan and submit any comments and questions. As with above people not members of this group are also most welcome to send in their thoughts and ideas – would really strengthen the process.

4. Planning meeting for all in this group

We are proposing an in-person meeting with all available members of this interim working group. The purpose of this meeting would be to finalise the plan and commence the transition to the actual Global Alliance.

The best dates would seem to be November 7th and 8th. Please let us know which dates work for you.

The best venues are probably New York or Washington DC. If your organisation is interested in hosting this planning meeting please let us know. Plus please let us know any other support you may require to attend.

Thanks – most happy to answer any questions of course – Rafael and Warren
