Child rights action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

iPods - Most Sought-after Gadgets in America

Summary

This article traces trends in children's and young people's use of the "iPod", a technology developed by Apple, Inc. that stores various kinds of data. One of the most common types of data stored on an iPod is music; users can plug in a headset and listen to songs that they have uploaded to the portable device. (Click here to read more about this technology.)

This article focuses on the use of iPod technology in the United States context, suggesting that its purpose may be shifting from solely entertainment-oriented to educational.

An excerpt from the article follows:

"iPods have caught the fancy of new generation Americans. After becoming standard issue at some American colleges, the trend has now reached high schools. For instance, at the Brearley School, a private school for girls in Manhattan, where Samantha is in the eighth grade, the iPod went from a 'want' to a 'must have' this year when its use was incorporated into foreign-language and classics courses.

"Although some parents are concerned about 'flashy' gadgets, most trust the faculty's enthusiasm, says Priya Chatterjee, chairwoman of Brearley Parents' Association."
