Project HOPE - Seven Steps for Planning a Community Initiative
- Establish a 'Vision Team' (up to 30 people) to brainstorm ideas for the programme
- Identify a local coordinator to manage the process and unleash multiple volunteer-initiated projects
- Gather data about youth, adult perceptions, and community resources for asset building. Use surveys, focus groups, interviews, community meetings, etc.
- Raise community awareness of asset building, using newsletters, fact sheets, newspaper articles, and television and radio interviews
- Form task forces to develop action plans for specific areas (e.g. support, structured time use, positive values) or specific types of initiatives (e.g. mentor and volunteer programmes). Use members of your vision team as the core for these task forces.
- Develop a vision, priorities and action plans based on the information you gathered and the work of the task forces.
- Formally launch the initiative once action plans are in place.
