Child rights action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
The purpose of the manual is to help those working with communities in becoming effective agents for improving the conditions in which small children grow. The manual uses a participative and non-prescriptive approach that enables communities to identify constraints, develop plans of action, and manage initiatives.

The manual is comprised of four books:
  • Book One focuses on the issues facing young children. It helps identify good practices, not so good practices, and practices missing altogether. As well, it helps promote discussion of possible solutions. [74 pages]
  • Book Two focuses on the problems facing young children and promotes an analysis of suggested solutions. [28 pages]
  • Book Three focuses on participatory project planning, monitoring, evaluation, and management. [58 pages]
  • Book Four focuses on the issues concerning groups, on choosing leaders, on developing skills for managing the planned activities, on organising the identified resources, and on supervising and reviewing the planned activities. It also discusses the setting up of income-generating activities. [70 pages]
