After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The Information and Social Monitoring Project - Peru

UNICEF-Peru has undertaken a project to address information gaps related to the rights of women and children in Peru. The project involves developing a system of policy analysis and the provision of relevant information in order to support decision-making at the governmental level. The project also fosters capacity building in public and private institutions and the development of strategic alliances and social networks. Finally, an advocacy component is designed to encourage society to take responsibility for the rights of children and women.
Communication Strategies
The project includes producing, analysing, and sharing information that is based on the monitoring and evaluation of children's and women's rights and related policies. Strategies include:
  • Contributing to a process of informed decision-making in national policies and a channelling of resources that prioritises children, adolescents, and women through the production, application, monitoring, and evaluation of information.
  • Promotion of active commitments to the rights of children and women, inserting these issues into the work plans of alliances, organisations, networks, and opinion leaders.
  • Promotion in the media a respect for the rights of children and women in line with the spirit of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
  • Promotion of the rights of the excluded populations through social monitoring.
  • Promotion of dialogue and social responsibility between civil society, the government, and the private sector and contribute to increased coordination between and within them.

Key Points
Children make up the poorest group in Peru, accounting for 60% of the population living in poverty. According to project organisers, better indicators are needed in the areas of gender, age, ethnicity, and other factors that reflect the multiple dimensions and complexity of social exclusion. Besides quantitative statistics, they say, there is a need for qualitative information on issues such as growth and early development, populations in exclusion, domestic violence, adolescents, domestic work, and the situation of the marginal urban areas and the Andes and Amazon regions.

The Information and Social Monitoring Project is part of the five-year Promotion and Monitoring of Rights Programme implemented by UNICEF-Peru in 2001. This programme operates at the national level in an effort to increase access to information about, knowledge of, and commitment to, the adoption and implementation of children's and women's rights. The programme includes two national projects in addition to this one: Promotion of the Rights of Children, Adolescents, and Women and The Project for Social Communication.
