Young Reporters for the Environment Award
Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) is a global network of youth writing about about the environment and taking photos of environmental problems and solutions in their communities. The international network created between groups of students and teachers serves as an international press agency, specialising in producing and delivering information about the environment. YRE membership is open to students in grades 5 through the end of high school. Members' articles and photos are eligible for the annual international award. The goal is to enrich local media with data, advice, information, and photos from other countries.
Each year the best YRE productions from each country are collected and put into a book, resulting in an international collection of articles in English and national languages, as well as photos and national news. A number of articles and photos are chosen by the International YRE Jury each year to receive an award. The awards are given within the categories of agriculture, cities, energy, coastline, waste, and water. Among the 6 awarded articles, one is nominated for the Super Award.
YRE has national offices in 20 countries. Deadlines vary by country. National coordinators set the award deadline for their country, and submit their national selection of articles and photos to the YRE International Coordination. In Canada, for example, the national coordinator is Environmental Defence; the 2010 deadline is April 30 2010.
