Child rights action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Study on Transmission of HIV Through Breastfeeding - Zimbabwe

This is a study undertaken by The ZVITAMBO Project in an attempt to operationalise recently revised UN policy about informing women in developing countries on the risk of transmitting HIV to their children through breastfeeding.
Communication Strategies

The study includes developing an intervention to educate and counsel African women about HIV, breastfeeding, and replacement feeding, monitoring the impact of the intervention on at least 5000 both HIV-positive and -negative mothers, and disseminating results to government health officials and healthcare providers throughout the country.

Development Issues

Women, children, HIV/AIDS, health and nutrition.

Key Points

"Since replacement feeding can also pose a significant threat to child health, there is concern that the dissemination of information about HIV and breastfeeding will lead to a shift away from breastfeeding among HIV-negative women or women who do not know their HIV status."

Partners

The project will be implemented in close collaboration with government health officials in Zimbabwe.
