Child rights action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
This comic book on malaria forms part of the WASH 4 ALL (water, sanitation and hygiene for all) comic book series, which is being created "to positively engage youths in the fight against diseases related to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene."
The series is being produced by Horizon International, a non-governmental organisation based at Yale University in the United States, in collaboration with the media service of Beautiful Feet International (MediaBFI), a non-profit organisation based in Nigeria.
The comic has been produced for young boys and girls of school-going age (7 to 19) in developing countries where WASH culture is relatively poor, therefore affecting the health, lives, and education of children. It is also intended for young adults, as well as parents, schoolteachers, community leaders, and health care workers, who can use the comic as a learning tool.
It tells the story of a school, "somewhere in a remote part of Africa", and shows how schoolchildren are suffering from the symptoms of malaria and dying from the disease. Two children, Dan and Ann, decide to take action, which results in their school taking measures to prevent malaria and all water- and sanitation-related diseases. These measures include removing sources of stagnant water, such as potholes and discarded waste, where mosquitoes can breed, and introducing regular hand washing practices. Besides malaria, the comic looks at trachoma and schistosomiasis and touches on the issue of open defaecation (which will be the focus of the second comic in this series). The comic contains informative side bars that explain the facts about each of the diseases.
The comic book draws upon the content of Horizon's book and its accompanying DVDs, "Water and Sanitation Related Diseases and the Environment: Challenges, Interventions and Preventive Measures", and is also being used to publicise the contents of the book more widely to a general audience.
