Child rights action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Reproductive Health in the Egyptian Press - Egypt

Reproductive Health in the Egyptian Press is a FRONTIERS and POLICY Projects activity. It aims to increase the use of contemporary reproductive health and family planning research by multiple audiences and to maximize the impact of research findings on policy and programme management by increasing coverage in Egyptian Arabic newspapers and magazines.
Communication Strategies

There will be 4 roundtable discussions for journalists from May 1999 - Mar. 2000 on issues such as youth, sexual health, and safe motherhood. Immediate objectives are: to enhance journalists' knowledge of specific areas related to population and reproductive health issues; to improve the content and the quality of reporting in the Egyptian Arabic language press; to increase the coverage of reproductive health issues in leading daily and weekly newspapers and magazines in Egypt; and, to strengthen the professional network of talented journalists interested in and committed to covering reproductive health issues.

Development Issues

Print media, family planning, health, women.

Key Points

The discussions will be attended by the core group of journalists that were formed in early 1998 under the Asia and Near East Operations Research (ANE OR/TA) Project in addition to other newly identified journalists. As a motivation for the group members to cover the issues discussed during the roundtable, a contest will be announced at the beginning of the project for the best article produced by a group member covering any related topic during a pre-determined period. There will be a 3-tiered evaluation of this roundtable discussion initiative.

Partners

Frontiers in Reproductive Health Project of the Population Council, and the Policy project in Egypt, with support by the USAID/Population office in Egypt.
