Patil, A. T., G. Bhuvaneshwari, et al. (2008). "Participatory nutrition intervention for poor families of SHG women in a peri urban village." Indian Journal of Nutrition and Dietetics 45(8): 328-334.
OBJECTIVE: A study was conducted to study the impact of nutrition education on preparation of soyabean recipes, and that of soyabean intervention on the nutritional status of self-help group (SHG) female members in Kotur Village, Dharwad, Karnataka, India, an area where majority (73%) of the households were classified under very poor category.
PARTICIPANTS: 122 SHG members (37 children, 64 adults and 21 elderly) were included in the study.
RESULTS: The results showed that nutrition education had a positive effect on gain in knowledge regarding nutritious soyabean recipes. Soyabean intervention significantly increased the body mass index of adults and the number of those with chronic energy deficiency. The intervention also improved the nutritional status of children, with a higher percentage of nutritionally normal and a lower percentage of severely malnourished children. All women involved in nutrition intervention programme enhanced the taste, texture and appearance of soyabean recipes. The appetite and working efficiency of the study subjects were also improved.
CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that incorporation of soyabean in daily diet has a beneficial effect to reduce malnutrition.
