Child rights action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Male Engagement is Advancing Women Empowerment - Kenya

I look foward to learning more from the participants of the #SBCCSummit in Indonesia in April 2018. I will also be showcasing a poster presentation of how male engagement is advancing women empowerment in Kenya and how it is important to ensure the social and cultural communication practices are used to promote the empwerment of women.

Dear Joan

"Male Engagement is Advancing Women Empowerment",  this is a good initiative that could solve a lot of social, cultural and traditional /patriarchal related problems. We can not ignore the existing fact that most if not 80% of the states are patriarchal in nature. In most countries where HIV and AIDS incidence and prevalence is high are male dominated.  Men have the power to contain and or spread the virus if they want to, they have the ability to debate and pass most of the policies or laws (at international, national, provincial or even at district down to a household level).

Living men out out the HIV race is detrimental to our societies.  Leaving No One Behind should be the motto of the century.  Major donors have tried to introduce programs that segregated and left men and boys in the HIV programming and in the fight of the epidemic.  instill hostility to women.  We need to move together men, women, boys and girls let us not create divisions amongst the sexes as this has proved to be advancing hatred and spread of HIV (those with and those without knowledge on HIV prevention).

Umzingwane has developed the model that recognizes and takes on board all community and influential leaders from village to provincial level (TPRB model).  Recognizing Traditional, Political, Religious & Business leaders including some influential individuals at community level such as traditional healers (both males and females).

This approach has worked for our organization in the Umzingwane district in Matabeleland South province of Zimbabwe (where HIV and AIDS prevalence is highest in the country).  Chiefs, politicians and church leaders meet, discuss contemporary problems and come up with possible solutions that they sell to their subjects, followers or supporters when they meet at their different fora.  Leaders will speak in one voice whether in churches or at community level... with this women and girls who are said to be vulnerable have been saved from the perpetrators of harmful practices.

Women and girl are now able to freely speak as they know their rights which are also being supported by all leaders in the community
