Child rights action with informed and engaged societies

After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter.

Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

On the transfer, co-founder Victoria Martin expressed her pleasure to see this work continue under Wits' leadership, knowing that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

As Wits, we honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades and look forward building from that strong base. This includes co-founders Warren Feek (1953-2024) and Victoria Martin as well as La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA), which continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com with links to The CI Global site. We are also eager to forge new partnerships and entertain new ideas as we consider how best to contribute to social and behaviour change in our rapidly evolving environment.

If you are joining the International Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) Summit in Panama, please join Wits and CILA on Monday, 22 June, to share your thoughts and suggestion for the relaunch of the Communication Initiative. We will be in Pacifica 5 from 12-1:25 for the Refuel, Reflect, and Renew Lunch Series: The Communication Initiative: celebrating a driving force for Communication for Social Change and the way forward. We will reflect on the legacy of Warren Feek and family in creating the Communication Initiative, consider the contributions of CI over the years and then turn our attention towards the future in this dynamic session.

If you are unable to join us in Panama, we still want to hear from you. Please contribute your thoughts by following this link: https://redcap.link/CommunicationInitiative2026 or reaching out to ci_surveys@commint.com

Overview of Programme/Course

The MSPH programme in Health Education and Health Communication is designed for individuals seeking specialised formal academic training in health education, health promotion and health communication. The programme equips students with the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary for careers in these areas. The curriculum emphasises health promotion, education and communication strategies for working with individuals, organisations, and communities.

A solid foundation in behavioural sciences principles and theories is provided, along with advanced skills in programme planning, implementation and evaluation. While the curriculum consists of a number of required courses, students are also provided with adequate flexibility to select among numerous electives. (Electives can be used to complete certificate programs in selected areas.)

The programme consists of one academic year of coursework and a minimum six-month field placement experience. The full-time field placement is designed to provide students with an opportunity, under supervision, to apply the knowledge and skills from the classroom to real health education, promotion and communication practice.

Students conclude the programme by producing a final paper that critically evaluates an activity or activities performed during the field placement.

Courses and Curriculum

Students must complete a minimum of 64 credits, which includes both required and elective courses in Health Education and Health Communication and Public Health , in order to become eligible for the field placement.

Students may also pursue ‘certificates’ in any of the more than 30 offerings available at JHSPH.  Certificates allow students to further tailor their educational training to meet their own unique career goals.

Teaching Process

Lectures and presentations expose students to foundational concepts and principles.  Many courses also provide students the opportunity to apply these concepts and skills immediately through pre-arranged practicum experiences with community partners.

Specifically for MSPH students, a faculty member works closely with MSPH candidates through a three-term seminar in the first year of the programme and throughout the second year of the programme through monthly seminars, field placement site visits, and one-on-one discussions to offer assistance as students complete their required final report.
