Child rights action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

GIMME6

Common Ground Productions (CGP) in 2001 developed GIMME6, a curriculum-based children's television programme focusing on relationship building and problem solving. The project also involved an educational and promotional campaign and the launching of an interactive website.
Communication Strategies

The television series, which aired in eight episodes, featured six kids who must learn to trust each other and develop a spirit of teamwork in a situation of adversity. In discovering an old, possibly haunted theatre in London, they learned to work together to solve a mystery against the wishes of someone who was trying to stop them. The characters were designed to encourage a positive self-image while breaking down negative stereotypes. Filming took place at 75 locations throughout the UK and involved 250 cast and crew.

In addition, a public education and outreach initiative was carried out in all countries around the world connected to the broadcast. Specifically, small, localised events were planned to generate media and public interest; educational outreach efforts were conducted in primary schools in the communities; promotional items were distributed; and one-on-one media briefings/episode preview meetings were conducted. An advertising campaign featured radio advertisements, TV teaser spots, and print and outdoor advertisements. Finally, the GIMME6 site was launched -- and is still in operation -- to draw children to the television show and to complement the show's effort to raise issues of global concern. While designed primarily for children, one page on the site provides links to parents' and teachers' educational guides that accompany each episode.
