Child rights action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
This 5-minute animated video, available in English and French, has been produced to help encourage pregnant women to be tested during pregnancy and to inform them about the process and steps a woman would ideally follow once she finds out she is pregnant and living with HIV, namely immediate and lifelong antiretroviral treatment. The animation is accompanied by a narrative told through the voices of a range of African characters. It addresses such questions as: the available options to avoid passing HIV on to the unborn child; the benefits of lifelong HIV treatment for mother and child; the implications of lifelong treatment for governments and donors; and the role of the woman's family and community in supporting her and making sure that no more children are born with HIV.
The video has been produced by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) for women living with HIV and their families, as well as health practitioners and community health workers. "Ideally, the video should be screened in waiting rooms inside clinics, at support group meetings, at community gatherings or during HIV and antenatal counselling." The video is available online, and a copy can be ordered from the contact below.
