Africa Alive! - 8 African countries
Africa Alive! is a multi-nation African initiative created to improve reproductive health and reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS among youth through synergistic partnerships. The Initiative was formally endorsed at a meeting in Harare, Zimbabwe on 16-19 November 1998 by representatives from Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe who work with youths to promote reproductive health and prevent HIV/AIDS. African regional organisations represented at the meeting included the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and the Commonwealth Health Secretariat.
Communication Strategies
The Initiative will have an estimated audience of 150 million youth across Africa and aims to establish and strengthen existing network to improve reproductive health and HIV/AIDS programming for youth and to advocate for a supportive environment for these programmes. They plan to generate funds from the public and private sectors and international donor agencies for a coordinated HIV/AIDS prevention programme across Africa. A regional music concert to create mass awareness of the dangers of HIV/AIDS and to promote prevention is scheduled to coincide with the World AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa in the year 2000.
