Child rights action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Green, C. P. (1999). Interventions to Improve Breastfeeding Behaviors: Detailed Summaries of 51 Studies. Washington D.C.: USAID Linkages Project.

OBJECTIVE: This document provides summaries of the available research from 51 studies on specific interventions intended to influence four key breast-feeding behaviors: early initiation of breast-feeding, feeding of colostrum to the newborn, exclusive breast-feeding for the first 0-6 months, and continued breast-feeding through the second year and beyond. These four behaviors are strongly linked to the prevention of infant malnutrition and illness.

METHODS: Studies were identified through database searches by the staff of the LINKAGES Information Resource Center, telephone conversations with experts, and a review of Wellstart International publications and through the bibliographies of relevant studies. Summaries of the 51 studies are organized according to the four behaviors and are grouped by study design. Almost all studies were quasi-experiments, involving some manipulation or intervention. Of the 51 projects reviewed, 24 were in Latin America and the Caribbean, 9 in Asia, 4 in sub-Saharan Africa, 3 in the Near East, 1 in the Newly Independent States, and 10 in Europe and the US.
