After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. 

Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future. 

On the transfer, co-founder Victoria Martin expressed her pleasure to see this work continue under Wits' leadership, knowing that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction. 

As Wits, we honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades and look forward building from that strong base. This includes co-founders Warren Feek (1953-2024) and Victoria Martin as well as La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA), which continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com with links to The CI Global site. We are also eager to forge new partnerships and entertain new ideas as we consider how best to contribute to social and behaviour change in our rapidly evolving environment.

If you are joining the International Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) Summit in Panama, please join Wits and CILA on Monday, 22 June, to share your thoughts and suggestion for the relaunch of the Communication Initiative. We will be in Pacifica 5 from 12-1:25 for the Refuel, Reflect, and Renew Lunch Series: The Communication Initiative: celebrating a driving force for Communication for Social Change and the way forward. We will reflect on the legacy of Warren Feek and family in creating the Communication Initiative, consider the contributions of CI over the years and then turn our attention towards the future in this dynamic session.

El Circo del Agua

Espectáculo lúdico-didáctico que tiene como objetivo sensibilizar a través del teatro sobre los beneficios del agua y la importancia de cuidar este recurso. Está dirigido a niñas, niños, adolescentes, y también busca incidir en profesores, padres y madres de familia.

Esta iniciativa es apoyada por la Agencia Suiza para el Desarrollo y la Cooperación (COSUDE), con el fin de aumentar el acceso al agua potable y mejorar las condiciones de salud en municipios rurales de Nicaragua.

Para su implementación se seleccionaron pequeñas escuelas ubicadas en los cuatro municipios más pobres del departamento de Matagalpa, al norte del país: El Tuma-La Dalia, Matiguás, San Ramón y Río Blanco, que presentan dificultad en el acceso a servicios sostenibles de agua potable, saneamiento e higiene.

Communication Strategies

El Circo del Agua apela a la comedia para transmitir mensajes educativos. A través de un montaje teatral que utiliza elementos del circo como payasos, magos y malabaristas, motiva la reflexión acerca de temas como el lavado de manos, la higiene y el cuidado del medio ambiente.

La obra se desarrolló con el apoyo de artistas profesionales y está basada en los mensajes clave del programa de agua y saneamiento, considerando elementos como las costumbres locales y el lenguaje cotidiano.

La estrategia incluye el diseño y publicación del libro "La escuela azul", un material didáctico que amplía las situaciones presentadas en escena. En el marco del proyecto se entregaron tres mil ejemplares al Ministerio de Educación para su distribución en las escuelas de los municipios.

Key Points

En Nicaragua el Circo del Agua es parte del modelo Escuela Azul que impulsa la Cooperación Suiza en coordinación con el Ministerio de Educación (MINED). Este modelo incluye la elaboración de los diseños de los sistemas de agua potable, baños, lavamanos y bebederos en las escuelas beneficiarias, así como el desarrollo de huertos en las escuelas seleccionadas, entre otras actividades.
